Bates College

Since its establishment in 1855, Bates College has championed the transformative power of the liberal arts, nurturing leaders fueled by a passion for knowledge and a deep sense of responsibility to the global community. Recently, Merrill Gymnasium, home to Tarbell Pool, indoor tennis courts, rock climbing facilities, and sports medicine resources, underwent a significant overhaul commencing in the summer of 2023. The fast-tracked project encompassed essential upgrades and enhancements to the dance studio and swim locker facilities which are shared with the soccer team and general public.

Partnering with M.W. Hoss, Bates College embarked on its most extensive renovation project at Merrill since it was built in 1980. The revitalization initiative entailed meticulous mechanical coordination and comprehensive under-slab utility work to expand locker rooms and showers while fostering more inclusive and equitable bathroom facilities. The refurbished spaces now boast over 5,000 square feet of sleek epoxy flooring, inclusive, gender-neutral bathrooms, and state-of-the-art showers, storage solutions, and meeting areas tailored for both team and individual use.

Recognizing the importance of minimal disruption to campus life, particular emphasis was placed on completing the renovation during the summer break. M.W. Hoss adeptly managed the procurement process, preempting potential delays by securing long-lead items such as lockers while strategically executing selective early demolition to expedite the design phase and preemptively address any unforeseen challenges.

The Merrill Gymnasium renovation stands as a testament to Bates College's unwavering commitment to enhancing student experiences, fostering inclusivity, and modernizing its facilities to meet the evolving needs of its vibrant community.
